At least local scorpions aren’t lethal here. I have seen these little pale brown nasties, and heard they are not killers but their sting is extraordinarily painful, like a chemical burn that eats into the flesh and gets worse as it goes. One just stung my neighbor. She hobbled straight to Mrs Landlady, who immediately applied some kind of local herb concoction. Until then, the pain had been building and building, and had reached mid-thigh, but after this treatment it soon receded.

The creature was on her balcony, and she didn’t have her glasses on. I just went and put on flip-flops, before coming back to type this sentence.

In two days I’ll be in the UK and can forget about things like this for a while. I can be cautious about traffic dangers, potential psychopaths, and the coming cold, but thoughts of nasty bitey things can go into storage along with the sandals.
