Grandma Kardos left Hungary, age 15, on her own

Gran left Hungary in 1905, for Germany where she got a ship to America. The Hamburg State Archives provided the document of her departure. The facts are pitiful, to my eye. “Anna Dudas, age 15, born about 1890. Single female. Hungarian. Household members: 1.”

They sailed via Dover and Bologne-sur-Mer to New York, in winter. It took two weeks. I always assumed she went steerage, but it looks like she went second class. On the steamship Pennsylvania, there was freight as well as 160 passengers in first class, 180 second, and 2,200 third/steerage. It was one of the largest vessels of its kind.

I also learned from ancestry.com that it was drafted into military combat in 1914. It had one funnel and four masts, and I don’t know what that means, structurally, but, it was built in Belfast and weighed over 13 tons, dimensions 559’ x 62’.

I assume the crossing was vile.

More on her arrival, next time.
